My work always starts with the face. I am never afraid to make a bold line. Everything follows and builds from that. I work directly in ink, with no reference sketches or pencil lines. Once begun, the drawing keeps building and growing, layer upon layer.
There’s movement in my work, and not just in the finished pieces. The paper moves as I work. It’s almost like creating a musical flow of art. The ink, the paint, the paper – they all create a movement that grows and develops in each piece.
There’s also a movement from piece to piece when I look at my work. I can see the progression of color, placement and character documenting a moment, an emotion, a character. I can read a story looking through m y drawings. One chapter ends, another begins, and then another picks up the thread in a different way. Every drawing I start, I finish. Nothing is thrown away. It’s all part of the movement.
I’ve paid my dues in my art, and for my art. I focused my life through my art. It has a purpose to fulfill, a complete in itself. Inspiration comes, it moves and it amazes me.
